We are delighted to announce that we are now ready to welcome you fully into Stannergill Distillery and you can enjoy a fabulous tour with our team.
We are opening our doors for exclusive guided tours of Castletown Mill, the home of Stannergill Whisky and the next chapter in the story of Dunnet Bay Distillers.
You’ll step behind the scenes of our carefully restored 19th-century mill — a building rich in Caithness history — and follow the journey of our whisky from grain to glass, whilst also learning about the conservation and restoration of Castletown Mill to become Stannergill Whisky Distillery.
A destination worth the journey
Set just off the North Coast 500, Castletown Mill is a landmark of Caithness industry and resilience. Alongside our tours, visitors will be able to enjoy our Grain Store Restaurant or Calder Coffee Shop, featuring locally inspired dishes, and browse our gift shop, offering our full range of whiskies, spirits and gorgeous gifts.
A fabulous way to spend a morning or afternoon – enjoy a tour with refreshments available either side! Plan a morning coffee, followed by a tour before heading to our restaurant for a lovely lunch. Or lunch with us, enjoy your tour and return to finish off the experience with a coffee and a delicious bake!
What to expect
- Our guided tour takes you through every stage of the whisky-making process — from grain to glass — with a behind-the-scenes look at our milling, mashing and fermentation areas and our beautiful copper stills with their breathtaking backdrop.
- You will be welcomed in our Mackenzie Gathering Room with a whisky cocktail before a further exploration of the building. You’ll learn about the mill’s remarkable restoration, our whisky process, and the stories that inspired the Saga Series whiskies.
- Each visit ends with a tasting session of three spirits, enjoyed in the warmth of our Traill Tasting Room overlooking our beautiful stills.
The details
Premium Tours run at 11am and 2pm from May until October and on selected days over the winter months. It is advised to wear flat soled shoes due to the open grating style flooring.
Tours last around 1 hour 30 minutes.
