Discover the Spirit of Castletown Mill
We are opening our doors for exclusive guided tours of Castletown Mill, home of Stannergill Whisky and the next chapter in the story of Dunnet Bay Distillers.
You’ll step behind the scenes of our carefully restored 19th-century mill — a building rich in Caithness history — and follow the journey of our whisky from grain to glass, whilst also learning about the conservation and restoration of Castletown Mill to become Stannergill Whisky Distillery.
From June until October, tours are available at 11am & 2pm from Tuesdays to Sundays, and on selected days over the winter months.
£25 per person and tours will last around 1 hour 30 minutes. We regret we cannot accommodate under 18’s on a tour.
A Destination Worth the Journey
Set just off the North Coast 500, Castletown Mill is a landmark of Caithness industry and resilience. Alongside our tours, visitors will be able to enjoy our Grain Store Restaurant or Calder Coffee Shop, featuring locally inspired dishes, and browse our gift shop, offering our full range of whiskies, spirits and gorgeous gifts.

Important visitor information
We want you to enjoy your visit fully when you come to Stannergill Distillery. Please take a moment to read these important points and to view our FAQ’s.
- At the moment, the flooring in our production area is a steel open grid grating. This means you can see right down to the floor below. Please be aware of this if you are sensitive to heights.
- It is important to wear flat soled shoes due to the open grid grating on our floor.
- Please be sure to keep phones, loose change etc in pockets to reduce the chance of them dropping through the open grid flooring.
- Please arrive 5-10 minutes ahead of your booked tour time. This will allow us time to meet you and get you seated in our Mackenzie Gathering Room before the tour begins.
Yes, all guided tours of our distillery are conducted in English.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. We love children and have three ourselves, but our licensing regulations were very strict on areas on where children and young people are permitted. Under 18’s are allowed in our shop and restaurant.
Dogs are welcome in our shop and we can even provide them with a wee treat and fresh water.
Dogs are not permitted in The Grain Store Restaurant, Calder Coffee Shop or on a tour
Yes, but not whilst you are driving! We are sourcing sustainable pots to allow you to take away the tasters, but meantime you are welcome to bring along 3 x 20ml containers for your tasters.
We are working hard to make sure the building is fully accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with specific access requirements. At the moment, we have a lift up to the first floor to allow access to The Grain Store Restaurant and into the production areas. Once in to production the floor changes to an open grid flooring which makes accessibility to crutches and wheelchairs difficult. We are sourcing a level walkway and hope to have this installed very soon, with a ramp up to the Traill Tasting Room. Our Calder Coffee Shop is accessed by four steps at the front but we do have an accessible access route – please pop into our shop who will be happy to guide you there. We have an accessible toilet beside The Calder Coffee Shop and on the ground floor in the Atrium, under the Grain Store Restaurant. We are working on an Accessibility Guide and will continue to make improvements to make it easy for everyone to visit.
