We're Halfway There

At today’s site meeting we stumbled across another milestone as we realised that we are, all being well of course, at a halfway point in the conservation and revitalisation of the Castletown Mill building!

The Windows Arrive

This was a moment we had been waiting for - the windows arriving and going into the building! Norbloc Construction have been hard at work installing these beautiful aluminium windows, making the most of the incredible November we have been enjoying. It is amazing how having the windows fitted changes the feel of the building.

Fitting the windows feels like reaching a significant milestone in our restoration journey. Windows do more than just fill gaps in the walls—they bring in natural light, transform the space, and breathe new life into the structure. Seeing the windows installed symbolises moving beyond the foundational work and stepping closer to our vision of a fully functional distillery. It’s a tangible sign of progress, making the historic mill feel less like a construction site and more like the vibrant facility it’s destined to become.

The image above looks on to the gable end of our event space and it is amazing to stand in there now with so much natural light flooding into the room.

Washback Flooring
Floor Levels

Another exciting advance in progress was the installation of open grate galvanized steel flooring on the first level surrounding the washbacks. This practical flooring choice prioritises safety and ventilation. The open design allows for excellent airflow, eliminating the risk of a build up of ethanol vapour and ensuring a safer environment for everyone in the mill. Additionally, the industrial appeal of the steel grating complements the stunning stone walls beautifully, creating a visually pleasing aesthetic.

Walking on the grated flooring is a bit unusual as you see through the grating to the floor below.  Martin is quite accustomed to it from his time working offshore, but for Claire, it might take a little while to adjust!

The Saga of Benjamin & Jessie Calder
The Saga of Benjamin & Jessie Calder

This is the next in our Castletown Mill:  A History Through Whisky series, which utilises a carefully curated blend of grain and single malt whiskies, designed to celebrate periods of the mill’s rich history, to raise funds for its conservation and revitalisation.

The bottle features a studio portrait of Benjamin Calder (1853–1921) and his wife Janet (1855–1924). Originally the tenant miller Benjamin purchased Castletown Mill on 26th November 1913 for £550. The series known as sagas (stories) features grain and single malt whiskies matured for a minimum of 10 years before being expertly blended and bottled at Castletown Mill.

Benjamin was born the year that Andrew Usher II (1826–1898) created the first true blended whisky. Saga 3 pays homage to this by using a higher proportion of Speyside malts to create a smooth, yet complex whisky.

Kevin has expertly sourced casks from Speyside -  Strathmill Distillery (first fill bourbon hogshead) and Tamdhu Distillery (port cask) to blend with existing casks in our inventory, including a single grain whisky from Cameronbridge matured in a first fill bourbon hogshead, a small proportion of Deanston Olorosso sherry cask.

The result is a smooth sweet dram, with lots on the nose - malty sweetness, hints of honey, oak, vanilla, little bit of dark chocolate

Sponsor a Roof Tile
There is still time if you would like to be a lasting part of this buildings history then please consider sponsoring a roof tile. When the distillery is open to the public you will be able to come along to identify your tile, as we will provide you with it’s positioning on the roof.

It also makes the perfect gift!
